As Memories & Time Entwine, A Hanging Branch Connects Us, is a visual narrative that retraces the fragments of the self and my familial identity. Weaving together the imaginations of my Great-Grandfather’s mysterious film stills with my own photographs, memories and time entwine in a transient dialogue. Using the camera to retrace these fragments, lost and buried memories resurface. Spaces, objects and environments reveal themselves. Past and present relationships, the familial and the self, form new meanings and exchanges. Gazing between then and now, a dream space emerges where connections and new relationships emerge. The work aims to reflect upon my youth, my ancestors, and my connection to those closest to me.
The indistinct blur that once surrounded my lineage and identity becomes an interplay between absence and presence, connection and affiliation, experiences, and imaginations. In pursuit of nostalgia in a time of isolation, A Hanging Branch Connects Us reflects upon the interrelationships of the self, lineage, and memory. Interpreting the fragility of our memories, my ancestral tree and the self, the work reflects upon my identity as it shifts in my youth, mirrored in the past and reflected in the present. It expresses the many layers and structures of belonging within the world, often in motion, lost in the fragments between.
